全文:
GANDHINAGAR: Narendra Modi, the schoolmaster, marketed Chinese and Japanese to children across Gujarat who had been ordered by a government fiat to listen to his two-hour Teacher's Day address and question-answer session on TV.
With infrastructure woefully inadequate, primary school students were allowed to go home, but senior students were told to assemble at public auditoriums in Ahmedabad in the hope of getting the promised chocolates as an incentive. Reports from the districts suggested that authorities struggled to put together these programmes in educational institutions.
Hurriedly managed TV sets for the show failed at some municipal schools, while in colleges, students preferred to hang around in the campus, than listen to the Gujarat chief minister.
The education department order circulated on Thursday warned there would be surprise checks on schools to find out if Modi's speech was being heard. But there were no reports on Friday of such checks.
In an address which may not have reached to the targeted 15 million students studying in 55,000 schools and 1,200 colleges, despite the strict instructions issued by the education department,
Modi said, ‘‘Asia is becoming increasingly important in the world. Here, too, Japan and China are set to become the main engines of development. There is need for more children to start learning Japanese and Chinese in order to interact with the businessmen of the respective countries.”

His statement was taken in the light of denial of visa by many Western countries, including the USA and those in the European Union, forcing him to turn his eye eastward.

I have tried learning chinese but it is impossible because I cannot get the vocal sounds at this age. ITs a language thats best learned during young age. As the world becomes more globalized people with technical skills, and communication skills would be most sought after. We must understand the vastness of china. China is a bigger country than India both interms of population and landmass. In future the challenges faced by Indians for competing with the rest of the world will not always be based on cost advantage but will also be based on ability to provide good service. Proper communication is essential for delivering excellent service.

Clement D'Souza,
